Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment for Impetigo

Impetigo is a medical condition in which there is ulceration of the skin.  This ulceration starts oozing and later forms crusts.  Scratching of these ulcers leads to a spread of the infection to the surrounding skin.  This condition usually occurs more in children than in adults.  Crowded living conditions and lack of adequate hygiene are contributing factors for impetigo.

Impetigo is usually treated with the use of appropriate antibiotics.  The maintenance of skin hygiene is important in treating this condition and preventing its spread.  Ayurvedic herbal medicines which can be utilised in the treatment of impetigo are those medicines which have an antibiotic and anti-septic action, and which also have an anti-inflammatory mode of action.  These medicines control the infection and help the ulcers to heal.  In most individuals affected with impetigo, these simple treatment principles are usually sufficient for the control of impetigo.  However, in some patients, a recurrence of the condition can be seen.  Recurrent impetigo is usually because of poor skin hygiene and decreased immunity of the skin.  In such situations, it is advisable to use Ayurvedic herbal medicines which improve the immunity of the skin, detoxify the blood circulation to the affected parts, and also help in a faster healing of ulcers.  This treatment can be accomplished both by oral medication as well as the local application of herbal powders or ointments.

Individuals who have recurrent or widespread impetigo on the body can also be given Ayurvedic medication to boost the general immunity of the body.  While treatment for impetigo for1 to 2 weeks usually suffices, treatment for recurrent or widespread impetigo needs to be given or two to three months.  However, almost all patients recover completely from this condition.  Recurrent or widespread impetigo may also cause a septic or toxic reaction in the body, especially in children.  This can cause inflammatory reactions within the body and lead to chronic medical conditions such as inflammation of the kidneys.  It is for this reason that conditions like impetigo need to be treated at the earliest possible.
