Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment for Mitral Valve Regurgitation and Aortic Valve Regurgitation

The flow of blood in the heart is uni-directional because of the valves present in the heart.  The heart has four main valves out of which the mitral valve and the aortic valve have special clinical significance.  Stenosis of the valves is related to a narrowing of the flow inlet through the valves, because of which blood flow is at a higher velocity through a narrow opening, leading to increase workload on the previous injecting chamber of the heart.  On the other hand, regurgitation relates to backflow of the blood because of incompetence in the closure of the valves.  The clinical condition associated with this regurgitation is named after the affected valves, in this case, it is known as either mitral valves regurgitation or aortic valve regurgitation.  These conditions lead to an increase in size of the heart, which in the longer run can cause heart failure.

The treatment of mitral valve regurgitation and aortic valve regurgitation in the modern system of medicine is mainly surgical, which usually involves replacement of the defective valve.  Ayurvedic medicines can be utilised to treat mitral valve regurgitation and aortic valve regurgitation either before surgery or in patients who cannot be operated upon for various reasons.  The Ayurvedic medicines which are useful in these clinical conditions act upon the heart muscle as well as the tendons connecting the heart muscles to the valve leaves.  The overall effect of these medicines is that the regurgitation of blood reduces significantly and the overall pumping action of the heart improves to such an extent that the major clinical symptoms of the affected individual can be controlled very well.  In addition, these medicines have a corrective action on the heart, so that symptoms do not recur even after stopping the treatment.

Ayurvedic treatment for the management of mitral valve regurgitation and aortic valve regurgitation can therefore be considered to be quite effective in a majority of the patients.  Most people affected with these conditions require Ayurvedic medicines for a period of four to six months.  The important thing is that Ayurvedic treatment can significantly alter the lives of people affected with mitral valve regurgitation and aortic valve regurgitation.

Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment for Polycystic Kidney Disease

Polycystic Kidney Disease is a genetic disorder and runs in the family.  People affected with this disorder usually have multiple cysts of varying sizes.  Most such affected individuals also have similar cysts in the liver.  If the cysts are small in number and size, usually they do not create any problems for the affected individual; however, if the cysts are large in number and size, they create problems in the long run by increasing blood pressure, and damaging the kidney structure to such an extent that the structure of the kidneys starts deteriorating.  The same pathology can work for the liver too.  There is no modern treatment for this medical condition, and mostly symptomatic treatment can be given for the resulting complications.

Ayurveda has several medicines which can act on cysts and reduce both the number and size of cysts.  In addition, there are several Ayurvedic medicines which act on abdominal cysts, benign tumours, and fluid filled pockets such that the size can either be reduced, or the growth can be dissolved completely.  Ayurvedic medicines work effectively for polycystic ovaries, polycystic kidneys, as well as within the liver.  Most such medicines are simple herbs which are completely safe for prolonged use and also have multiple benefits like improving the digestion, and improving the function of the affected organ such as ovary, kidneys and the liver.  The proper use of such medicines therefore helps in conception in women having polycystic ovaries.  Individuals who have polycystic kidneys can be treated so as to reduce the size and number of the cysts, in order to prevent complications like hypertension and chronic kidney failure.  More importantly, the timely use of such medicines helps prevent damage to the tissue in the kidneys and liver.

Ayurvedic medicines are therefore highly effective in the treatment of polycystic kidney as well as polycystic liver.  It is important to commence the treatment at the earliest after a definite diagnosis of the disease, in order to get maximum improvement.

Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment for Avascular Necrosis of the Hip (AVN)

Avascular necrosis of the hip is a medical condition in which, due to various reasons, the blood supply to the head of the hip joint reduces drastically.  This results in a gradual deterioration of the structure of the hip joint, resulting in a destruction of the hip bone head.  This causes severe pain to the affected person and also results in impaired mobility of the hip joint.  There are no modern medicines which can halt the progress of this disease or reverse the damage done to the hip joint.  Modern treatment consists of controlling pain and graded mobility exercises of the joint.  The standard treatment for advanced avascular necrosis of the joint is surgical correction, whereby the hip joint is either repaired or replaced.

Ayurvedic medicines can be utilised judiciously to treat avascular necrosis of hip.  Ayurvedic medicines help to restore normal blood supply to the hip joint and also provide sufficient nutrition and calcium to the hip joint to help restore and reorganise the structure of the hip joint.  In addition, pain also needs to be controlled effectively in order to maintain the morale of the affected individual.  Local application of medicated oils and fomentation also helps in reducing pain to some extent.  The main treatment of avascular necrosis of hip is to help reorganise the hip joint to the maximum extent possible.  The amount of improvement obtained with medicines depends upon the degree of damage done when the patient opts for Ayurvedic treatment.  However, irrespective of when treatment is commenced, all people affected with avascular necrosis of hip improve to some extent.

Usually, treatment is required from four to six months in order to give significant relief to the patient.  Most of the people affected with avascular necrosis of the hip can resume their normal day-to-day activities and lead a near normal life.  Ayurvedic treatment is thus very important in the treatment of avascular necrosis of hip.

Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment for Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation is a medical condition in which the upper chambers of the heart beat at an abnormally fast rate. This results in dysfunctional blood circulation, which causes breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, and an increased risk of the formation of blood clots and other complications. There are multiple causes of atrial fibrillation which need to be investigated thoroughly in order to effectively treat this condition.
Ayurvedic medicines have a very good corrective action for the treatment of heart related medical conditions like irregular heart beats, conduction blocks, heart failure, and dilated heart. Angina pains, and recurrent heart attacks, which result from blocked coronary arteries, can also be effectively treated with Ayurvedic medicines.
Conduction defects of the heart include atrial fibrillation, bundle branch block, ventricular tachycardia, and ventricular fibrillation. These conditions can be treated effectively with Ayurvedic medicines. In addition to treating the conduction defects, known causes also have to be treated concurrently.
The scope of Ayurvedic treatment in such problems related to the heart is highlighted in patient testimonials such as the one given below:
Dear Dr Mundewadi,

I really think your Ayurvedic medicine has saved me: last December 2010, I was taken to hospital for atrial fibrillation and given some medicine, multaq, which made me very weak, I could not have any activity, just go from bed to my armchair, and back to bed.

I turned to Ayurvedic medicine, and Dr Mundewadi sent me his medication for atrial fibrillation; by that time I had stopped taking multaq because of its side effects and replaced it with a beta-blocker.

I took the Ayurvedic medicine as well as the beta-blocker for 3 months, and at the end of May, went to my cardiologist who could not find any sign of atrial fibrillation; he told me to stop my beta-blocker and everything is fine, I am only taking warfarin and if all goes well, I will stop it in 6 months.

I think it is a pity Ayurvedic medicine is not well known outside India; I think Indian doctors should make their medicine known all over the world.

PS: Please feel free to use this testimonial, but just sign it with my initials, F.L.H., from France”.

Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment for Post-Herpetic Neuralgia

Herpes Zoster is a medical condition in which rash and blisters appear on the skin, following the distribution pattern of a nerve ending, usually seen only in one half of the body. The rash is accompanied by a burning pain of severe or moderate intensity. This infection is caused by an activation of the chicken pox virus within the spinal cord, due to various reasons such as stress, exposure to cold, reduced immunity, and concurrent illness or infection.
While the rash usually subsides within a week or two, damage to the nerve may persist due to incomplete treatment or an absence of treatment. This results in severe pain in the affected area, usually lasting from several weeks to several months or years. This condition is known as post-herpetic neuralgia, and is usually seen in the elderly. This pain can be incapacitating for the affected person, and frustrating for the attending physician, since the condition is usually intractable to treatment.
Ayurvedic medicines have bee found to be very useful in the treatment of post-herpetic neuralgia. The treatment is aimed at providing immediate, symptomatic pain relief to the affected individual, in addition to treating the root cause of pain, which is the nerve damage due to Herpes Zoster infection. Treatment is advised for a period of four to six months, which is the time normally required for a complete healing of the affected nerve. Repeated reassurances and encouragement for the affected individual are necessary, since the pain resolves completely only with a healing of the nerve. Concurrent administration of modern pain killers may also be required for severe pain for a few weeks, so as to maintain the morale of the patient and help to maintain compliance to the full course of treatment.
Ayurvedic medicines can thus help treat post herpetic neuralgia, which is usually considered very resistant to treatment.

Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment for Appendicitis

Appendicitis is infection and inflammation of the appendix, which is a rudimentary part of the intestines. In the initial phase of inflammation, the appendix is very friable, that is, it can rupture easily. In this stage, it is advisable to admit the patient to a surgical hospital for close observation and treatment, and surgery if necessary. Once this acute stage passes of, Ayurvedic medicines can be commenced to help resolve the mass.
Ayurvedic treatment for appendicitis is aimed at treating the infection, helping the inflammation subside, and dissolving the lump. The herbal medicines useful for this have special properties to not only control the infection, but to improve the blood supply to the appendix, without causing any harm to the organ. This helps in detoxifying the mass, as well clearing the debris from the area. The appendicular lump thus starts dissolving slowly, and the appendix heals completely over time.
The advantage of this type of treatment is that the appendicitis can be cured completely, so that further episodes of infection and inflammation are prevented. This is especially useful in patients with appendicitis, who cannot be operated upon, or who have recurrent episodes. Ayurvedic treatment is usually given for three months, after which people with two or three recurrent episodes have been symptom-free since the last fifteen to twenty years. While this treatment has also been successfully used in patients with severe and acute infection of the appendix, this is not routinely recommended because of the potential risk of perforation, and its resulting complications.
Judiciously used, Ayurvedic treatment can thus prove to be a boon for patients who experience the painful and often frustrating episodes of recurrent appendicitis.

Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment for Liver Failure

The liver is an important organ of the body and is primarily useful in the digestion process as well as for the detoxification of substances harmful to the body. This organ has a substantial capacity for retaining its functionality even with extensive damage; however,   prolonged and heavy alcohol, drug and medicinal abuse, infections and trauma can ultimately result in liver failure. Modern medicines have little to offer in order to prevent liver failure or heal the damage done to the liver. Liver transplantation is offered to people with complete liver failure; however, there are various related problems like availability of a liver graft, surgical risks, and compatibility as well as organ-rejection issues.
Ayurvedic medicines have a definite advantage in the treatment of liver failure, since there are many herbal medicines which act directly on the liver. The plethora of widely available ‘Ayurvedic liver tonics’ are sufficient proof of this. Herbal medicines act on the liver cells to treat both infection as well as inflammation. These medicines also significantly reduce scarring and permanent liver damage, if used in a timely manner. The medicines also improve blood flow to the liver, in addition to increasing the liver secretions, mainly bile.
Patients with established liver failure benefit from Ayurvedic medicines since these improve appetite, reduce complications like oesophageal varices, and accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity. The sluggish liver also starts performing in a better fashion in order to reduce accumulated toxins within the body. Ayurvedic medicines also help in the detoxification process by aiding elimination through the urinary system as well as the gastrointestinal system. Symptoms of jaundice like yellowing of eyes and skin, and itching are also significantly reduced or eradicated completely. Patients with advanced liver failure also exhibit involvement of the nervous system. Ayurvedic medicines can also treat these symptoms, and prevent further complications like convulsions and coma.
It is important to note that positive results are directly related to how quickly Ayurvedic treatment is instituted in established liver failure. Patients who benefit from treatment and achieve some physical stability need to take stock of their lives and try to make significant lifestyle changes, in order to avoid the known causes of liver failure.
