Tuberculosis is infection in the human body with the Tubercle bacilli and is fast turning into a major killer disease of modern times.  Currently, this infection is being increasingly observed both in developing as well as developed countries, with at least a third of the words population harboring a latent infection of tuberculosis.  Multiple resistances to available treatments for this disease is fast causing the emergence of multiple drug-resistant tuberculosis with its associated high mortality.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment can be given as supportive treatment to modern anti- tuberculosis treatment, in order to overcome resistance as well as to improve the immunity of the affected individual.  Ayurvedic herbal treatment for tuberculosis is therefore aimed at treating the main tuberculosis infection as well as substantially improving the immune status of the affected individual in order to help the diseased body fight against the in infection and overcome it.  Ayurvedic medicines which have a specific antibacterial action, especially for tuberculosis, are used in high doses for periods ranging from four months to twelve months, in order to overcome the tuberculosis infection.

The side effects and toxicity of any ongoing conventional anti-tuberculosis medications can be considerably reduced by adding Ayurvedic herbal medicines which have a specific action on the liver and kidneys.  Ayurvedic immunomodulatory agents improve the immunity of the affected individual, reduce treatment time, and help to maintain the strength and vitality of the patient.  In addition, Ayurvedic medicines are also used to boost the immunity of the affected individual specifically for the tuberculosis infection and more so for the entire respiratory tract, which is affected most with tuberculosis infection.

Aggressive and regular treatment with Ayurvedic herbal medicines can also serve to treat multiple drug-resistant tuberculosis, bring about a complete remission from the disease, and improve the lifespan and quality of life of the affected individual.  Ayurvedic herbal treatment can thus be judiciously utilised in the management and treatment of tuberculosis.
