Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is an inherited disorder which results from faulty connective tissue affecting the skin, tendons, muscles, and blood vessels. This condition is characterized by easy bruising, loose joints, hyper elasticity of skin, and weakness of tissues. Individuals affected with this condition are susceptible to skin damage due to trauma or excessive exposure to the sun. There is no specific treatment for this condition in the modern system of medicine.
The Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome consists of giving medicines which have a specific action on the skin, tendons, muscles, and blood vessels. These medicines provide a corrective action on the faulty connective tissue related to these parts and thereby strengthen the skin and other organs. In addition, herbal medicines which provide strengthening material to the body can also be used in conjunction to the above-mentioned herbal medicines. Ayurvedic medicines are also used to correct the overall metabolism of the muscles and tendons, so as to provide a long-term strengthening effect on the skin, muscles and blood vessels.
This treatment can be supplement in the form of localised therapy, in which the entire body is given a light massage using medicated oils, followed by medicated steam fomentation. Localised therapy can be given in others different forms too, such as rubbing the skin lightly with soft cloth bags containing rice boiled in milk, or providing a continuous medicated warm oil drip on the skin, procedures known respectively as Pinda-Sweda and Pizichil.
Long-term treatment with Ayurvedic medicines gradually strengthens the connective tissue of the skin and other organs so as to provide strength and support to the different organs. This helps in preventing long-term damage to the skin, joints and other internal organs. Ayurvedic herbal treatment can thus significantly improve the quality of life of individuals affected with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Treatment needs to be given for periods ranging from 6 to12 months, in order to provide significant relief from the condition.
