Gastro esophageal
reflux disease, also known as GERD, is a medical condition in which there is
damage to the lower part of the esophagus due to reflux of acid from the
stomach. This can be due to excessive
acid secretion, mucosal damage, an inefficient lower esophageal sphincter, and
lifestyle issues. Treatment involves
making lifestyle modifications like reducing weight, reducing aggravating food
items, increasing the height of the head side of the bed, and medications like
antacids, H2 receptor antagonists, and proton pump inhibitors. This condition can occur at all ages and in
both sexes. An untreated or severe
condition may cause permanent damage in the lower esophagus or even changes of
malignancy.
Ayurvedic herbal treatment
is very effective in the treatment of GERD.
Treatment is given to reduce acid output, improve digestion, improve
mucosal immunity, heal ulceration and improve the mobility of esophagus as well
as the functioning of the lower esophagus sphincter. Medicines is safe and highly effective
Treatment needs to be
given for periods ranging from three to six months, depending upon the severity
of the condition and the response of individual patients. Those who have a severe problem and do not
respond to standard oral medication can also be given Panchkarma procedures
like Vaman (induced emesis) or Virechan (induced purgation). These procedures are then followed up with
oral medication which helps even patients with severe condition to have
prolonged remission or a complete cure.
Lifestyle
modifications and diet control are also very important in the management of
GERD.
