Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment for Dubin Johnson Syndrome

Dubin Johnson syndrome is a rare form of liver disorder mainly characterized by the presence of mild jaundice throughout life.  Most individuals affected with this condition exhibit only one symptom – jaundice - which may be caused by an incomplete metabolism of bilirubin in, and may appear only after puberty or adulthood.  This condition can be aggravated by alcohol, pregnancy, oral contraceptives, infections, and other environmental factors.  This condition usually does not require treatment, and most individuals just require a careful long term follow up.  However, in some individuals, high levels of bilirubin in the blood may cause damage to the brain and other organs in the longer run.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for Dubin Johnson syndrome is aimed at correcting the metabolism of bilirubin so that jaundice can be corrected.  Aggravating factors need to be closely monitored and avoided.  Long-term treatment with small doses of herbal medicines can be given to such individuals in order to maintain a proper metabolism of bilirubin, so as to prevent long-term damage to important organs.  This treatment can be supplemented with medicines which remove toxins present in the blood either from the kidneys or through the gastrointestinal tract.  Medicines which strengthened the central nervous system as well as other important organs also form part of the treatment and management of this condition.

Long-term, low-dose treatment of the liver can be given for about three to four months and then stopped for one or two months.  In this way, symptoms can be treated and long-term complications avoided, with the use of minimum amount of medicines.  Counselling and psychotherapy may be required in the long-term management of this condition.  Herbal medicines may possible be required for some individuals in order to treat stress and anxiety, which are commonly associated with this condition.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment thus has a significant contribution to play in the management and treatment of Dubin Johnson syndrome.
